Amstelveen

Meet the Amstelveen neighbourhood.

Hi Mamas and Papas, welcome to Amstelveen! My name is Heather McParland and I’m your Amsterdam Mamas Ambassador for Amstelveen.

I’ve lived here on and off for eight years and currently live next to the large shopping center (Winkel Centrum Stadshart) in the Elsrijk part of town with my Dutch partner and 10mth old daughter. I am a stay at home Mum, but previously worked at The British School of Amsterdam.

I understand that moving to a new country can be bewildering and at times, isolating. But fear not, I am here to help and if I can answer any of your questions about moving to, or living in Amstelveen, don’t hesitate to get in touch. And if I don’t know the answer, I will try my best to guide you in the right direction.

The area is fabulous for families with children. Amstelveen Gementee provides lots of lovely outdoor spaces to enjoy, including Amsterdams Woods (Bos) which stretches from Amsterdam, Amstelveen and Aalsmeer. Within the woods are a goat farm, riding stables, pancake house and paddling pools.

If you and your children would like to get to know a few farm animals, make a visit to Elsenhove a great petting farm with a big playground and cafe. There’s even a clog and cheese farm in Amstelveen, Clara Maria!

There are many local parks with paddling pools in the area. They are filled and emptied regularly in the summer months. Plus, there are great swimming facilities available at the Meerkamp swimming baths (zwembad). They run friendly baby and parent swimming groups, which are in Dutch, but many non Dutch Mamas and Pappas attend.

For grown ups there are a wide variety of restaurants in the area, and as with most things when moving to a new country, it’s all there, it’s just knowing where to find it. Plus I aim to organize regular drinks evenings where Mamas can get together, meet and share a glass or three of wine!

There are a huge number of expat families in Amstelveen and we are all here to help and support you whilst you find your way. I look forward to meeting and helping you settle into your new community.

Don’t feel lonely, get in touch. You are an email away from meeting up with your Amstelveen tribe.
